The Reading Challenge scheme is designed to help pupils whose reading skills are about two years below expectations. They might be Year 7 pupils who have been assessed at Level 3 in reading at the end of Key Stage 2, or Year 8 pupils whose reading skills were shown to be at Level 3 to 4 by teacher assessment at the end of Year 7.
The Reading Challenge handbook explains how to assess pupils for the scheme and how to train coaches to deliver it. Successful models in Cambridgeshire include schools who have used Year 10 or Year 12 students to act as coaches.
