 Every Child Matters

Every child matters, the Government’s vision for children’s services, was published in September 2003. It proposed reshaping children’s services to help achieve the outcomes children and young people told us are key to well-being in childhood and later life.

These outcomes are:

  • Be healthy
  • Stay safe
  • Enjoy and achieve
  • Make a positive contribution
  • Achieve economic well-being

This guidance, relevant for nursery, primary and secondary/post-16 phases of education, uses a provision and outcome model to provide examples of how the five outcomes could be achieved through English.

We hope that this guidance will help subject leaders and schools identify how this subject can significantly contribute to the Every Child Matters agenda and subject specific self-evaluation of the five outcomes.

We hope you find the guidance useful. Please contact Jackie Gibbs, Science Adviser, if you require any further guidance.
